Kashiwara – Twin town of Grosseto

Thanks to Ai Minami, who has been nominated “Ambassador of the City of Grosseto” in Japan, our promotional kit – containing a DVD with the promotional video and the album - has been delivered to the authorities which really appreciated it.
They will manage to arrange a cultural twinning between the two cities, inviting artists from Grosseto.

Qu’il est agréable, dans la mer de productions in- sipides ou sans relief qu’on livre chaque trimestre à notre appréciation de chroni- queurs, de pêcher la perle qui oc- cupera une place de choix parmi les joyaux de notre discothèque. Il n’y a pas photo, cette perle nous vient une fois de plus d’Italie, ce vivier que les vieux de la vieille de notre rédaction ont contribué à faire connaître et à placer au rang du meilleur du genre, vous savez, la douze cordes, le Mellotron, la lûte et la basse Rickenbaker.GRAN TURiSMO VELOCE, c’est d’abord le nom d’une mythique voiture italienne des années ’70, cette même époque qui a vu l’émer- gence du prog italien. L’origine et les références sont donc clairs. Originaire de Toscane, le groupe s’est formé en 2008 avec Claudio Filipeschi au chant et aux claviers, Flavio Timpanaro à la basse, Stefano Magini à la batterie, et Massimo Dolce à la guitare, à la programmation et (sic) aux idées dingues.
La musique ? Elle passe en boucle sur mon lecteur, surtout quand je me rends au boulot, alors je ne vois plus la grisaille et le trafic. Et comme le CD n’est pas trop long, je peux même me le repasser pour le trajet de retour !
D’habitude, une chronique aussi courte que celle-ci traduirait un CD qui ne vaut pas la peine mais, croyez-moi, c’est juste parce que vous détailler les morceaux mas- querait mon principal message : touchez-y ! Allez, juste pour vous faire plaisir, je vous mentionnerai mon préféré, le quatrième mor- ceau Quantocamia, un instrumen- tal où sont rassemblés tous les ingrédients, instruments et tech- niques de composition, qui font saliver les (probablement vieux) amateurs du genre.

Come dovrebbe essere un buon disco di progressive rock al giorno d’oggi? Le risposte potrebbero essere infinite, considerando l’incredibile vastità questo mondo musicale. Di sicuro ci sono alcune caratteristiche che sono necessarie per la riuscita di un nuovo album, specie se rappresenta l’esordio di un gruppo. Innanzitutto ci dovrebbe essere una forte personalità, che affranchi un po’ la band in questione da modelli specifici e fin troppo abusati. Sarebbero poi opportune discrete doti tecniche, la capacità di staccarsi dal facile ascolto, ma al contempo di mostrare un feeling immediato o quasi e, magari, essere capaci di contaminazioni che non facciano venire meno l’omogeneità del lavoro, nè portino alla creazione di ibridi di dubbio gusto.
I Gran Turismo Veloce, scoperti da Samuele Santanna dei Raven Sad, con il loro debut-album Di carne, di anima, mettono subito in mostra queste caratteristiche e ci permettono di ascoltare un prodotto di estrema qualità che li lancia subito tra le più interessanti realtà del prog italiano. E la loro nazionalità la ostentano in maniera forte, sia cantando in madrelingua, sia mantenendo quei sapori mediterranei cari ai classici mostri sacri della nostra penisola, sia sprigionando un feeling piacevolissimo con melodie di classe e mai banali. Sfoderano, così, un repertorio notevole, con una classe raramente percepibile per un debutto discografico.
Nove brani, una ghost-track, una buona mole di idee e una carica a tratti travolgente sono ben presenti in questo album che propone un prog pronto a flirtare con il rock duro, con la psichedelia, con la canzone italiana di qualità, con il metal. Una “cantata per quartetto e voce” in diversi movimenti, come spiegano gli stessi GTV alla fine del disco.
Al centro del lavoro sembra esserci la canzone Misera Venere. Si tratta della terza traccia del cd, caratterizzata da incantevoli melodie vocali su tappeti sonori avvincenti di chitarra e tastiere, capace di far avvicinare prog e cantautorato colto un po’ come avevano fatto i Germinale non molti anni fa in Cielo e terra. Di questo brano sono presenti anche due riprese: una nella quale, con un arrangiamento leggermente diverso, il romanticismo strumentale è incrementato dal bellissimo intervento del flauto (e dal sottofondo che evoca il sempre caro mellotron) ed un’altra come breve ghost-track che vede invece il sax a guidare.
Ma ce n’è per tutti i gusti… Volete un po’ di rock sinfonico abbastanza classico? Prendiamo la strumentaleQuantocàmia: quasi otto minuti di cambi di tempo, di intrecci chitarra-tastiere, di guitar-solos dal saporehackettiano, di andamenti epici, di crescendo ipnotici, ecc. Volete atmosfere moderne? Interessantissimo il pop-hard-prog di La paura, che, non perdendo di vista l’aspetto melodico, fa convivere un pizzico di elettronica, ritmi robusti, echi chitarristici floydiani e collage sonori stravaganti. Volete potenza sonora? Eccovi serviti con L’estremo viaggiatore, un prog-metal intelligente con il quale i GTV rielaborano (molto bene) le lezioni dei Dream Theater.
Certo, raccontato così, l’album può apparire variegato, eppure, come già accennato riesce a mantenere un’omogeneità ed una compattezza ben evidenti, grazie alla forte personalità mostrata dal gruppo che fa venir fuori una identità propria e ben definita. Tutti i brani, quindi anche quelli non citati, hanno comunque la loro forza e fanno capire come la band sia arrivata preparatissima alle sedute di registrazione. Se al prmo impatto colpisce subito la carica diretta unita ad un certo tiro che rende orecchiabile la proposta musicale dei GTV, ad un ascolto attento non si potrà fare a meno di notare anche le fini tessiture e le brillanti costruzioni che caratterizzano le composizioni dell’album. Di carne, di anima impressiona favorevolmente, coinvolge in maniera molto forte e mi sento assolutamente di dire che rappresenta una piacevolissima ventata di freschezza nel panorama del prog italiano.

GTV is another Italian surprise, after years of meandering output, the celebrated Prog country is kicking serious butt again by unleashing a massive amount of new groups = Pandora, Il Bacio della Medusa, Il Labirinto di Specchi, La Coscienza di Zeno, Mappe Nootiche, Conqueror, Coral Caves, Corte Aulica, Fjieri, Notabene, L’Estato di San Martino, No Sound, Rohmer, Aries, Chiave di Volta, UTO and Narrow Pass, etc?.Tons of delicious stuff. Much like my RPI colleagues , I am astounded by this rather unique release, a heady mix of modern crunch united with old school elegance, a quartet that takes no prisoners in going for the jugular, both instrumentally where the playing is phenomenal and compositionally, creating strong musical moments. Guitarist Massimo Dolce can rage and fulminate as well a swoon and seduce, combining sizzling soloing with crunchy rhythms. He is the source of “weird ideas” as stated in the credits and he certainly delivers the unforeseen. Claudio Fillipeschi provides 2 crucial ingredients, a barrage of keyboards (though piano is the main vessel) and a stellar voice that is both debonair and expressive. Generally, RPI rhythm sections are not too shabby and both Flavio Timpanaro and Stefano Magini conspire to lay down a powerbase foundation that has no cracks. After the first 2 mini-openers, things get seriously into focus with the next 2 epics “Misera Venere” and “Quantocamia” are scintillating compositions that are simply mind blowing, both for elusive creativity and sonic restraint. While the first is refined and graceful with its looping bass-led motivation, scorching guitar, growling Hammond, howling mellotron and dignified vocals , (to be reprised later on a seductive part 2) , the second contrast nicely with a more forceful delivery, broodingly brutal and macho manly, the flailing drum/synth combo devastating everything in its path. The unruffled piano mid-section is to expire for, a liquid calm amid the raging gales, the ideal platform for a mercurial lead guitar solo that is concise yet striking. This is primo prog, ladies and gents! Three shorter tracks ensue, the delicate “L’Artista” supported by acoustic guitars, piano and lilting beat, giving the lead lung the stage to wail away in animated agony. Walls of keyboards contribute to the emotion. “L’Estremo Viaggiatore” goes in the other extreme, the bass upfront and center, morphing into a power chorus hurled convincingly, chugging guitar and blistering solo etc?The voice shines once again, the man can sing. “La Paura” is more oblique, less refined, kind of a stranger mix of styles (check out the sliced and diced guitar licks) including a main melody that contrasts nicely due to its overt unfussiness. This is another secure track. The afore- mentioned “Misera Venere reprise” is a killer track that has all the classic prog elements from Taurus bass pedals to intricate flute and swelling waves of anxious mellotron. The binary beat only adds to the thrill, propelling the forlorn mood ever forward, the trembling vocals shimmering brightly in resolute pain. Colossal highlight this is, complete with obligatory blasts of lead guitar. Wow! The finale is an 8 minute + closer that does not fail to inspire, piano leading the charge, holding the singer’s hand (silly, ‘coz it’s the same person!), the progression remains deliberate and poised whilst adding classical touches (the huge string symphonics and the trumpet-like synths) that heighten the appeal immensely. The attention to the minutest detail is what makes this such a compelling recording. A long silence then proceeds to a totally unexpected sax blow-out goodbye that is uncredited to boot .

GTV is a welcome addition to the forever rejuvenated and rejuvenating RPI scene , proving once again that Italy is a prog hotbed of the very highest caliber. Can we have some more, please? Perhaps a bit longer , too …..

The last two years has been one long party for all fans of Italian symphonic prog. Some stunning albums has arrived in the scene. Albums from both debutants, new bands with their follow up albums or new studio albums from the 1970s bands.
Gran Turismo Veloce and this, their debut album is one of the reasons I can safely say we have never had it so good, those of us into this scene. Gran Turismo Veloce does not follow the full RPI recipe though. Their sound is not RPI for a start. The guitar sound has more in common with the new British bands. The vocals are Italian, but also pretty much in the Radiohead style. By no means does does Gran Turismo Veloce follow the RPI scene. Instead; they have carved out their own place in the scene. And Gran Turismo Veloce is a RPI band. No doubts about that.
The music on Di Carne, Di Anima is both symphonic and melodic. I would argue; very melodic and very intelligently made too. The lyrics are brilliant. The music is very pastoral with a lot of melodic electric guitars. Some of the guitar solos is really stunning and air guitar inspiring.
In short; this is a great album by all accounts. This is also an album which will grow and grow on the listener. I have a long term friendship with Di Carne, Di Anima.
The party continues.

Il neo-progressive non è morto. Lo provano ad esempio alcuni elementi di esso rintracciabili senza fatica nella musica di gruppi che hanno raggiunto un successo planetario, come i Muse o i 30 Seconds to Mars. Un fresco gruppo new-prog giunge ora dalla Toscana, per la precisione da Grosseto. Alle spalle hanno già lEP In un solo brivido, ma è solo con questo Di carne di anima che i GTV esordiscono sulla lunga distanza, candidandosi come eccellente promessa della nostra scena. Scoperto da Samuele Santanna dei Raven Sad e arruolato dalla scuderia di Loris Furlan, il quartetto italiano è autore di un CD bello e frizzante. Diverse le scelte coraggiose compiute: intanto quella apprezzabile di cantare nellidioma nazionale (cosa non frequentissima in ambito neo-prog), quindi luso intelligente di loops e programmi (che ammodernano la tradizione del genere senza snaturarla), infine  somma gioia  ci sorprendono con il miniMoog della quarta traccia (Quantocàmia) e soprattutto con gli inattesi Taurus pedals nella ripresa di Misera Venere. Tra gli altri brani, davvero ben costruiti e gradevoli Sorgente sonora, Lartista, Lestremo viaggiatore e L’indice e locchio. Consigliati.

I could only start every review by stating the fact that there’s yet another great band out of the Berlusconi-plagued country. This time we’re talking about a quartet, formed in 2008, and named after a sportscar out of the 70s. These guys do something to me on their debut “Di Carne, Di Anima”. It contains passionate Italian singing with lots of emotion and expression, but yet again isn’t theatrical. Also very strong is the combination of the more quiet and the more bombastic pieces: the tension between these is almost coming out of your boxes. Also GTV succeeds into pulling you into the music, and move you forward too, to great finales. The album is full of ‘7th heaven’ (red: actually it says ‘floating’, in Dutch the words for 7th and ‘floating’ are very near) and ‘goosebumps’-moments. Especially the two longer tracks are worthwhile: much variety, varied keyboard-work, and an exhilarating closingsection with ‘antic keyboardsounds in ‘Quentocamia’, with a lovely built-up and breathtaking keyboard-playing of piano, classical orchestrations, Mini-Moog en Mellotron-violen en – koren.

A giudicare da “di Carne, di Anima”, esordio dei Gran Turismo Veloce, il progressive italiano gode di ottima salute. Ciò che colpisce sin dal primo ascolto è l’approccio contemporaneo e moderno. Pur dominato dalle tastiere il suono è completamente sintonizzato sull’oggi. Le linee melodiche sono eseguite con straordinaria eleganza, richiamando certe arabeschi de Le Orme, mentre i testi, per quanto ricercati, non eccedono in simbolismi o esoterismi superficiali. I GTV eccellono soprattutto in brani come “L’Artista” nel quale le chitarre e le tastiere si producono in cavalcatehard rock che si alternano a emozionanti passaggi rareffatti improntati a ricercate tessiture melodiche. Tutto “di Carne, di Anima” trasuda una pienezza ed una competenza musicale senza pari nel panorama della musica rock contemporanea. Un brano come “La Paura” dimostra come persino la tradizionale forma canzone italiana possa essere utilizzata per creare un brano complesso e fruibile al tempo stesso. Menzione speciale per “L’indice e l’Occhio” che esplode in una fantasmagoria di tastiere di rara bellezza.
